I am a highly experienced retail IT professional with over 30 years in the industry, having held senior management posts with a number of blue-chip UK retailers and their major systems suppliers.


My core skills are:

-       Project and Programme Management. I have successfully managed over 35 large scale projects and programmes, many through the entire project lifecycle. There is no project or programme that I would feel too large or difficult. I have successfully rescued a number of failing projects. Further, I am a certified PRINCE2 practitioner.

-       Departmental and Team management. Throughout my career, I have been responsible for sizeable departments and have managed at business unit level with full P&L accountability. I have directly managed teams up to 21 and indirectly up to 250. I am comfortable with multi-million pound budgets having previously been responsible for up to £65m capital and £5m revenue budgets.

-       Change Management. Many of my senior roles have been responsible for key change management programmes supporting significant business transformation. I have also had key responsibility for developing multi-channel retailing strategies and implementing them.

-       Excellent Business Analysis at Strategic and Tactical levels. My experience working with many retail formats and managing the implementation of solutions across functions has given me an enviable comprehensive yet in-depth knowledge of retail business processes that can be a major asset to any retail company. This provides an ability to rapidly assess business requirements and devise appropriate solutions which I have demonstrated on numerous occasions.

-       Strong Relationship Management. My retail and technical management experience combined with strong interpersonal and presentation skills honed over many years in senior roles, mean that I command respect and cooperation throughout the organisation from Board level to shop floor, both operational and technical disciplines. This means I am particularly qualified to manage projects, programmes or departments where strong stakeholder management is important.

-       Strong Supplier Management. My time in senior roles with major retail systems suppliers combined with those with large retailers managing suppliers has enabled me to develop strong supplier management skills so critical to large project / programme delivery and out-sourced environments.


My key experience:

-       Senior IT Management roles over 15 years with Burton Group (now Arcadia), Somerfield, Nurdin and Peacock, Allders, Pizza Hut and JD Wetherspoon.

-       Senior Sales and Marketing, Support and Business Unit Management roles over 14 years with major retail systems suppliers – Hugin-Sweda, Nixdorf, and Imagin where he has been responsible for managing projects and relationships with such companies as Unichem, CRS, British Gas, C&A, Allders, Toys ‘R’Us, Dixons Group, McKays Stores, Peacocks Stores, Laura Ashley, BAA Retail, Fortnum & Mason, Caviar House.

-       Management of projects / programmes for EPOS, Store Administration, Merchandising and Inventory Management, MIS, Marketing and CRM, Supply Chain, Warehousing and Distribution, and transactional web sites.

-       I have managed projects and operational departments using the following technologies – Microsoft platforms including Windows (NT, XP and 2003 Server), IIS, SQL-Server, Sharepoint, Biztalk, and other platforms including IBM mainframe and A/S400, Informix, Business Objects, Cognos, and various proprietary systems. He has been responsible for developing projects using the latest object oriented methodologies.


In summary, I am able to professionally manage both internal and external resources through effective relationships, to deliver the business benefits required by a competitive retailing environment. I have a passion for retailing and have sought throughout my career to build upon my strengths in this sector. I have been predominantly permanently employed until my last directorship of a software house in 1999, since when I have been contracted for specific assignments by major retailers for the last seven years.
